In the summer of 2006, seventeen-year-old Coley has lost her mother and been forced to move to a small town in rural Oregon to live with the father she barely knows, and she is in no shape to risk her already fragile heart. Then she meets Sonya, and the attraction is instant. Coley is afraid that everyone she loves eventually leaves, and Sonya has never been with a girl before and may be too scared to show up for her. Amid grief, small-town expectations and the pull between hiding and being seen, both girls have to find the courage to stop pushing their feelings down. Based on Hayley Kiyoko's hit song and video, this coming-of-age queer romance was praised by Autostraddle for its emotional push and pull, though the reviewer found its pacing uneven.
